Below are prime times in high school to complete a each step
preparing for college/university or technical school admission.


I.   Begin Career Investigation ---- 9th - 12th

     A.   a career inventory/test or survey.
     B.   Talk to experts in jobs that you are interested in exploring.
     C.   Job shadow several careers.

II.   Collect Information About Specific Colleges, Universities, or Technical Schools ---- 9th - 12th

     A.   Explore degree programs or college majors.
     B.   Explore admission requirements.
     C.   Explore housing opportunities.
     D.   Explore financial aid options.
     E.   Explore costs and tuition.

III.   Take Appropriate College Preparation Courses ---- 9th - 12th

     A.   Take courses that are required for college admissions.
     B.   These include: English, mathematics, science, history, foreign language (for some colleges), computer, fine arts, etc.
Earn Core 40 or Academic Honors Diploma.
     C.   Additional mathematics and science may be required for specific programs-check with the colleges of your choice.

IV.   Take the PSAT or PLAN: Preparation tests for SAT or ACT ---- 10th - 11th

     A.   Check out Barron's series for review for SAT or ACT at your local library or bookstore.
     B.   Check with your media center or local library for computer software designed for review.
     C.   Schedule this practice test through your guidance counselor.

V.   Take the SAT or ACT: Schedule through your guidance office. ---- 11th - 12th

     A.   Find out from colleges you are interested in which test is preferred for their campus.
     B.   Talk to your high school guidance counselor about scheduling this test.

VI.   Research Financial Aid Sources ---- 9th - 12th

     A.   College Goal Sundays-First Sunday in February each year.

     D.   Don't forget-March 1st deadline for FAFSA form the senior year of high school.

VII.   Begin Correspondence with Colleges, Universities, or Technical Schools ---- 11th - 12th

     A.   Contact the Office of Admissions at the colleges of your choice. Contact more than one college.
     B.   Contact the Office of Residence Halls for housing
information and room availability.
     C.   Contact the Office of Financial Aid for information about different types of aid and for help with the FAFSA form.

VIII.   Plan College Visits ---- 12th

     A.   Contact the Office of Admissions or Campus Visit Office for a tour and to speak with an admissions counselor.
     B.   Arrange a campus visit to every college that you are interested in attending.
     C.   Find out from the high school guidance office which colleges are hosting open houses. Be sure to attend.

IX.   Apply for Admissions to Colleges ---- 12th

     A.   Apply to more than one college---suggestion is 2 to 3 different colleges or universities.
     B.   Check with the colleges of your choice about application deadlines.
     C.   Make copies of all forms before mailing. These are for your file.

X.   Apply for Financial Aid ---- 12th



     A.   March 1st is the priority deadline for the FAFSA form.
     B.   Check with the colleges for any other deadlines that are for that particular institution.
     C.   Make copies of all financial aid forms before mailing. These are for your file.

XI.   Apply for Housing: FALL of Senior Year! ---- 12th

     A.   Check with the colleges for deadlines.
     B.   Make copies of all housing forms before mailing.
